Archery was first introduced into the Island Games by the Guernsey Organising Committee in 1987. The competitors shot a double FITA round over two days, 12 dozen arrows per day. The only class was Recurve bows as Compound was still a relatively new discipline. The island games are held every 2 years and are hosted by a member island.

In 1993, The Isle of Wight introduced the Compound class and all archers shot a Double FITA round over 4 days, 6 dozen arrows per day, usually with a rest day in between the two halves.

The Guernsey games in 2003 saw the introduction of the Head to Head, Individual and Team knockout rounds for both the compound and recurve discipline; in place of the second FITA round.

Gentlemen shoot at 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m. Ladies at 70m, 60m, 50m and 30m. Three dozen arrows at each distance.
